Have you ever given any thought to the power of television? Thinking about it now, it is amazing how something such as a television could possess so much power. Power you ask? Of course, television has tremendous power!
It works like HYPNOSIS. In the field of hypnosis a hypnotist will get the client to relax and then make positive suggestions for the benefit of the client. These suggestions can be permanent, lasting throughout a persons life, or they might need reinforcement by repeated suggestion. In the process of watching television, a viewer is usually relaxed and focused on the screen.
Then while the unexpecting viewer is in a hypnotic state, they are bombarded by commercials which are constantly repeated until they sink into the subconscious part of their minds. Messages sent to this part of the mind become automatic. The subconscious part of the mind cannot differentiate between right or wrong, good or bad; It accepts the suggestion as true.
Unfortunately not all the suggestions coming from the television are positive. For example, what is the first thing that comes to mind when I ask these questions ? HOW DO YOU SPELL RELIEF? R, O, L, A, I, D, S? WRONG! R, E, L, I, E, F. Or you might hear someone say that two out of three doctors recommend Tylenol. What about the thousands of doctors who do not recommend it? Or the cigarette manufacturers and their commercials which portray and make lasting impressions on our children and ourselves that cigarette smoking is the "cool thing to do" it’s the "in thing to do" after all if Joe Camel can be cool with a cigarette in its mouth, why not us? Because these suggestions are not of the positive kind and we do not really look so good with a cigarette in between our lips; Are these suggestions really that powerful you might ask? Well, of course they are. These suggestions are so powerful that the viewers are 'programmed' to believe them by repeated visual, auditory, and kinesthetic suggestions. We learn through these modes of thinking. Television offers all of these and more. In a way, you might say television is like mass hypnosis. It applies the really powerful suggestions which make a lasting impact on the viewer. So, obviously these suggestions are indeed powerful. Powerful enough to get the viewer to buy the product or the service through carefully thought out suggestions.
